More… GARDENING IN NORTH TEXAS THIS MONTH Continue to plant new shade trees, fruit trees, and evergreen shrubs. Mulch root areas. Continue to transplant established trees and shrubs while they are dormant. Finish planting pre-chilled tulip and hyacinth bulbs if you did not do so in December. Plant any bare-root plants including fruit and nut trees as well as roses. Continue planting pansies, snapdragons, kale, Swiss chard and other cool season annuals. Plant onion transplants anytime soil is ready. Plant spinach and snap peas mid to late month. More… QUESTION OF THE MONTH Question: Can my weather-damaged tree be saved? Answer: There is hope because although damaged trees may look bare and deflated, looks can be deceiving. Ask yourself the following questions to assess whether your tree can clearly be saved, it can’t or isn’t worth saving, or it’s a borderline case that should be given time to recover before a final decision is made. More… Important message from the Help Desk: The Master Gardener Help Desk is closed until further notice due to tornado damage. More… Meet Our Speakers Diana Harris Diana grew up in San Antonio and learned the joy of gardening from her parents. She became a Master Gardener in 2000 after moving to Dallas and confronting the harsh North Texas environment with its Blackland Prairie soil, blistering summer heat, and occasional winter freezes. Since then, Diana has taken advantage of opportunities offered by the Texas Nursery and Landscape Association as well as the Texas A&M and University of Florida educational systems to extend her horticultural knowledge. Loving to travel, she further advances her interest in different cultures’ techniques and approaches to garden design by frequently attending seminars in Asia, Europe, Mexico and the United States. Today Diana shares her knowledge on a number of horticultural topics in presentations to the public and to landscape and garden professionals throughout Texas and the Yucatan in Mexico. She is committed to nurturing humans, plants and animals; and embraces design practices that enhance environmental diversity. Diana supports practices advocated by the National Wildlife Federation to ensure wildlife thrive in a rapidly changing world. Her own landscape is a Certified Wildlife Habitat . In 1987, Diana bought a cattleya orchid in San Francisco and brought it home on a plane. Her gardening passions have varied through the years, but Diana has never abandoned the orchid and hardy tropical collections she still maintains in Dallas and Akumal, Mexico. Community Project Spotlight Moss Haven Elementary School The urban farm at Moss Haven Elementary School in the Richardson Elementary School District (RISD) is a wonderful place of renewal sitting on an area of softly rolling hills near Greenville Avenue, Royal Lane and Abrams Road. Originally Blackland Prairie, the property became a working farm in the mid-1800’s. In the early 1900’s, Highland Park oil magnate Harry Moss bought the land as a family retreat and a place to keep his herd of cows. Moss Haven Elementary’s closest neighbor is the original Moss family farm house so it’s not surprising that one hundred years later, in 2011, a group of school parents and one special education teacher got the idea to “bring back the farm.” Their goal was to show kids how food is grown, combat obesity by encouraging healthy food choices, and enable interdisciplinary education that includes science, math, creative writing and art. Initial development began after RISD approved the concept. Turning a weedy field into a place to grow food and educate kids took patience, trial and error, experts, dedicated ...
